I am sitting here back at my writing desk, sitting in the air conditioning because once again here in Louisville it is very hot outside. My dear friends, Renee and Denise are spending a few days here at Our Treehouse with me and earlier we went hiking at Bernheim Forest. It was much cooler this morning and this sixteen thousand acre forest is an absolute shady delight, filled with trees, the Tall Beings. They were everywhere, possibly hundreds of varieties. It was so interesting to compare the different leaves and the size of the trees, some short, some so very tall.
I am so happy my friends suggested we go somewhere to hike. It is one of their favorite things to do. I had not been to Bernheim for a year, August of 2023 when a music show was held by the lake where an outdoor amphitheater is located. Bernheim offers all kinds of events for families and for those of us that love nature the Forest provides the bonus of listening to the birds, checking out the wildflowers, and sitting on benches to relax with Mother Nature.
The wooden giants are a sight to see! Made from wood the artist Thomas Damby built them a few years ago. The three statues are approximately twenty to thirty feet tall; one standing, one lying down, and the third one sitting. All made from wood. I love the hair created from sticks on Mama Loumarie and Elina. The giant in the photo above is named Little Nis.
So I am inspired to visit Bernheim Forest on a more regular basis now. I used to take Reddogg with me and he loved to walk the wide trails in what is called the prairie fields. I think I’ll take him back and visit soon, when the weather cools off in September. It’s only a few miles down Interstate 65S and I want to offer my support to this sanctuary for so many living beings. I’m looking forward to it. :O)

The cool weather is here now. When I got sober almost 29 years ago, my God of my understanding/higher power was a tree/Tell Being. I slowly got back to the God of my childhood and I now follow Jesus! We are supposed to get down in the low 40’s here tonight.
Thank you for sharing this Steve. I had no idea your Higher Power began as a Tall Being years ago when you got sober. Wonderful story!
Bernheim is a treasure. It was my family’s refuge from the city when we lived in the Highlands from 1987-91. When we moved to Bardstown from Vermont in 2002 we immediately joined again. I’m there two or three or more times many months of the year. They’ve asked me to consider becoming a volunteer naturalist. Almost made it this year, but they moved the training to a weekend I already had booked for a dulcimer gathering. Maybe in 2025. Thanks for sharing this reflection and supporting the forest.
Alan, you will make a great volunteer naturalist! :O)
