I am attending an outdoor concert tomorrow, this Sunday! Yeah! I will be listening to music for most of the day and into the evening. The weather forecast is predicting rain. (Louisville, Ky, like most of the cities and states around here, is finally getting some rain.) But even the possibility of a rainy day for Sunday does not dampen my spirits. I love music. All kinds of music. It simply feeds my soul like nothing else can.

Our whole lives would be different if we did not have music to absorb and listen to, then start tapping that foot and get up and move, and dance! Babies love to hear certain types of music and young toddlers love to dance. It must be something in our DNA. :O) My dear friend, Grace, has traveled from Kansas to attend the concert with me. Mickey Dolenz is playing. He used to play with that famous band, The Monkeys. And Grace is excited! My darling Man, Alan, is going, and a couple of other dear friends, Jo and Gary. I am certain we will have a grand time.

Have you ever noticed how you can hear a certain song and suddenly you’re back in time, maybe back in elementary school or high school. You can remember the room you were in, who you were dancing with, maybe even a little romance going on! Maybe you’re just kicked back listening, relaxing. Or perhaps you are a musician yourself and there’s that song you used to play with your own band. Or you have come to understand it is alright to dance like nobody’s watching, especially when that song comes on that recharges your energy! Let loose! And always, always, there is that unforgettable music that reminds us of that wonderful movie we watched years ago. And of course, we pick certain songs for weddings, graduations, birthdays, and other special celebrations.

Music sets off all kinds of feelings, from happy to sad, the whole gamut. We can deliberately set the tone of our music to produce certain feelings. My last post I wrote about disappointment. I could choose to listen to a sad song to wallow around in my feelings of loss or sadness, or I could choose to set the tone of music to take me out of that “funk” when I am ready to release those emotions. That, I think, is quite magical! The power of music! I know, I know, the picture above is a little early, a month really. But put it on your calendar of you like. Music is that important.

And turn up the radio, slide that CD in place, or strum that guitar. Enjoy some memories, or make some memories. Hug up your partner or gather with some friends, and turn it up. Listen, sway, dance and sing. You’ll be happy that you did.

    Dear Joan and Alan,
Your beautiful words in tandem with Stephen Colbert’s interview with Paul McCartney this week—highlighted by “Days We Left Behind”—strike at the heart of God’s gift of music to all of us as humankind created in “Her/His Image.” Further, BG and I celebrate 58 years of marriage on June 21 at which time we shall “cut a rug” on the longest day and shortest night. Oh, yeah!!
